On January 19, 2010, Rite Aid annouced that Bryan Shirtliff will be appointed to the position of Senior Vice President of Business Development. He will be charged with developing merchandising initiatives to support the company's store segmentation strategy, which involves grouping together stores with similar characteristics and creating a unique business plan for each group. His responsibilities also include developing new business opportunities for the company's non-pharmacy and will assume this new position mid-February 2010.
Bryan is a 26-year veteran of retail and chain drug store merchandising. He joined Rite Aid in 1998 as a director in category management, advancing to positions of increasing responsibility in category management and being named Senior Vice President, Category Management in May, 2003. Prior to joining Rite Aid, he served as Vice President of Health and Beauty Care and General Merchandise for the Bruno's supermarket chain in Birmingham, Alabama. From 1983 to 1996, Bryan held positions of increasing responsibility at Osco/Sav-on (American Drug Store) in Oak Brook. Bryan started with Osco/Sav-on as an assistant store manager and holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Montana.
This month, Rite Aid also announced that it will promote President and Chief Operating Officer John Standley to CEO in June 2010. The company said its current CEO, Mary Sammons, will continue as chairwoman of the board until June 2012. Sammons has been CEO since June 2003.
Rite Aid operates about 4,800 stores in 31 states and Washington, DC.
