
Vernon Leonard Zimmerman, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on October 19, 1940, and raised in Leonore, Illinois. Vernon was a long-time member of St. Jude Parish.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Maureen Zimmerman, and their four children: Kristin (Todd) Gebhart, Elizabeth (Frank) Woods, Jonathan (Jennifer Shockley) Zimmerman, and Shane (Brook Stewart) Zimmerman. He is also survived by his sister, Kay Barton. Vernon's legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ruth Zimmerman, as well as his siblings, Kent Zimmerman and Ellen Pufahl.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Vernon found joy in fishing, camping, shooting, and woodworking. His passion for nature and craftsmanship was evident to all who knew him. He was an avid collector and took great pleasure in sharing his treasures with family and friends. Vernon's woodworking skills were particularly admired, especially the mouse that adorned his nativity scenes, a unique touch that brought joy to many.
Vernon could often be found with a cold beer at neighborhood fish fry's, fireworks, block parties, and Christmas Eve fondue gatherings, where he made lifelong friends.
He was a proud graduate of St. Ambrose College, which led him to a successful career in management and sales. This career took him across Iowa, Illinois, and finally to Indianapolis, which he made his home for 49 years.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation service will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, and a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Lord’s Pantry at Anna’s House (https://annashousemsc.org/support-us/make-a-donation-2/) in Vernon's name.
