2012 May 25: Bob Porter

Charles Robert Porter, known as Bob, was born November 13, 1947 in Fargo, ND to George and Ethel (Carlson) Porter. Following the death of his mother, he was also raised by his Godmother, Peggy Junkin. Bob is a 1965 graduate of Fargo Central High School and a 1970 graduate of the NDSU School of Pharmacy.


He served his internship with Osco Drug in Jolliet, IL. He continued working for Osco, transferring to Austin, MN in 1973. Bob was united in marriage to LuAnn Nylander, October 3, 1970 in Lake Park, MN. They purchased Service Drug in Detroit Lakes in 1982. They closed the store in 1992 and Bob worked for White Earth Public Health Pharmacy in White Earth, MN and completed his career with Seip Drug and CVS Pharmacy in Detroit Lakes.


He was a charter member of the Detroit Lakes AM Rotary Club, the Minnesota Pharmacists Association and Kappa Psi Fraternity. Bob loved hockey having played in high school, college and with the Detroit Lakes Old Timers until the age of 53. Bob loved working with kids, he coached Little League and Youth Hockey for several years and served as chief volunteer for the United Way of Becker County. For many years, Bob worked side by side with his Godmother, Peggy Junkin, running concession stands at many County Fairs and at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand shows. Bob made the best caramel apples Ever!!


Bob was a humble man with a quick, dry sense of humor. He was a loyal friend, dedicated pharmacist, loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. He cherished time with his kids and grandkids, taking them out on the pontoon whether it be fishing, tubing, swimming or just relaxing in the sun having his diet coke. He also enjoyed his time spent at his home in Englewood, FL, working in his yard, sitting in the sun and walking along the beach in search of shark's teeth, his "totes" and the Minnesota Vikings and his Detroit Lakes Lakers.


Survivors include his wife, LuAnn of Detroit Lakes, sons: Robert (Deanna) of Woodbury, MN, Brian (Sarah) of Fargo, ND, Mark (Amy) of Audubon, MN, 6 grandchildren: Andrew, Nathan, Benjamin, Sydney, Jackson and Charlee; 2 brothers: Glen (Joyce) of Concord, CA and John (Sue) of Sand Point, Idaho, his mother-in-law: Veronica Nylander of Audubon, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents and his Godmother, Peggy Junkin.
