A Message from Roger Carpenter

It has been my pleasure to serve on your Alumni Club Board of Directors since early 1998 and to fulfill the responsibilities of President since January 2001.  It has truly been a labor of love and I have immensely enjoyed all of the activities that the position entails.  All of us have a wonderful time at the various social functions reminiscing with friends and cohorts that shared a portion of our career paths as well as making friendships with those that we didn’t get to know as well during our Osco years.

My one and only disappointment as your Alumni Club leader has been frustration in getting a broader segment of our alumni colleagues to participate. . . . . .i.e.  to regularly attend our twice a year social events, to volunteer service as a director, or to step forward in a leadership capacity as an officer.  I’d like to share a thought or two on each of these issues.

Many of you live great distances from Chicago and Phoenix where we host the social functions.  Our Board makes every effort to get announcements of upcoming events into CONNECTIONS 5 to 6 months in advance to enhance the planning options for our out-of-towners.  At almost every event we have a member from as far away as Florida or California that has coordinated their travel to attend.  If you have not experienced this you will not believe the magic of seeing 50 smiling faces from your past and reconnecting with each on what has evolved since you were last together.

For local members, you really have no excuse.  WE NEED YOU . . . to sustain the vitality and excitement of the club.  If you have never attended one of our social functions, give it a try.  I guarantee that you will have a good time!  If you are an occasional attendee, use the advance CONNECTIONS announcements to pencil in the date so that you don’t miss an event.  If you are a regular, we love having you and sharing your companionship, but next time bring a couple of your former associates that never or rarely attend so that they will become regulars.  You get the picture.  These events are just too enjoyable to share with only 45-50 that normally attend.  There is no reason that we couldn’t have 100-200 alums/spouses/friends at our social get-togethers.  The more the merrier!   One additional item . . . . Please mail, call, or e-mail your RSVP to Barb Salerno at least a week in advance so that we can make a proper commitment for food.  While we will never turn away last minute attendees, it is difficult for the caterer if we have more participants than plates and chairs (which happened a couple times).

Lastly, it is the time of the year to assemble a slate of nominees that is willing to serve on our 2012 Board of Directors.  Would you consider offering your services?  The behind the scenes meetings are almost as much fun as the membership events and the time commitment isn’t that heavy.  In addition to the 2 social gatherings we have 3-4 Board meetings per year that typically last from 9:30-noon.  Time commitments outside these meetings would depend on your responsibilities and could range from almost nothing to 2-4 hours per month for a few positions.

I would like to recruit and work with at least one individual that is willing to step forward in a leadership role in the Alumni Club.  As mentioned before, I am completing my eleventh year as your President and would be pleased to pass the baton to a new leader.  I actually enjoy the work, however, I believe that “new blood” with fresh ideas would be healthy for the organization.  New concepts and approaches are needed to move us ahead and increase the participation level that I addressed above.  I would be agreeable to overlap with any new leader for as long as necessary and would wholeheartedly accommodate any needs for consultation after that.
The many corporate reorganizations our company has undergone over the past 10-20 years have segmented our former company into various parts and locals.   We will quickly lose the 75 years of Osco culture, heritage, and relationships if we do not make every effort to sustain them.  For this reason alone, our Alumni Club will play a vital role in the future and provide the vehicle to maintain the many friendships and bonds between associates.

Won’t you consider making an investment in the terrific people of our great company by making the commitment to attend as many of the club’s social affairs as possible?  Would you consider volunteering to serve on our Board or stepping into a leadership capacity?  Please contact me if you would like to discuss any of these Alumni Club needs.  You can volunteer or nominate another individual.  Please contact me or click  This email address is being protected from spambots.
